The lives of Aberdeen folk have been faithfully recorded in photographs since the end of the 19th century. Well to the fore of building up this priceless archive have been the "Evening Standard" and its sister paper, "The Press and Journal".
For more than a hundred years their photographers have been capturing the special character - and characters - of Aberdeen, both on glass slide and film.
With the passage of time even the most straightforward piece of street takes on a special significance as the immense amount of rebuilding in Aberdeen this century has seen hundreds of streets disappear.
The tremendous pride Aberdonians have in their sturdy granite city is reflected in the continuing popularity of the historic flashback photographs carried weekly in the "Evening Press".
About the Author
The Press and Journal was first published as a weekly title on Dec 29th 1747 and was known as The Aberdeen’s Journal. It was published on a weekly basis for 128 years until August 1876, when it became a daily newspaper.
In November 1922, the paper was renamed The Aberdeen Press and Journal when its parent firm joined forces with the Free Press. It has been the voice of Aberdeen ever since.
