On the morning of Sunday July 19 1896, thousands of Parisians awoke early to watch the world's first city marathon. The winner, by a mile, was a brickmaker from Sittingbourne in South East England.
Len Hurst won the 200-franc prize in a winning time of 2:31:30; 27 minutes faster than the mark of 2:58:50 set by Spiridon Louis of Greece three months earlier at the first Olympic marathon in Athens, Greece on 10 April 1896.
He went on to be one of the pioneers of distance running.
This is the story of Len Hurst.
