Undeliverable Letters, Unreachable Galaxies - Or, The Man in the Old Bowler Hat
Published 1st September 2024
The author of this dystopian work would have us believe that the unbridled development of Artificial Intelligence together with man’s moral and intellectual decline have plunged humanity into chaos and destruction. The letters raise the question of whether it would be both possible and desirable to programme Androids with an impeccable ‘moral sense’. All humans, we are told, are ‘morally defective’. The defects in the ‘human machine’ are more easily seen in the propensity for war and in man’s inhumanity to man. If Androids are programmed with a reliable ‘moral sense’, war and inhumanity may be eliminated universally and permanently. And if Androids became a ‘morally perfect species’, they might replace the ‘human machine’ entirely. Ultimately, humans, inevitably becoming more animal than human, would be phased out of civilised existence altogether.
